  3. About Speedometer‚Ķ
  4. Brings up a simple dialog displaying information about the program.

  6. Help…
  7. Displays this dialog with the General information button selected. To call up the Help dialog from elsewhere in the program, hold down the ‚åò key while selecting from the menus. This menu command can appear under the Apple menu (pre-System 7.0) or in the System Help Menu.

  9. File
  10. Save Machine Record‚Ķ
  11. This command allows you to save the results of all tests, system information, and a comment field as a Machine Record File. These files have a unique icon and can be loaded by the Analysis and the Utilities sections of the program.

  13. If you have not added a comment to the current machine record, you will be prompted to do so. This comment should describe anything unique about your system that might affect performance. In addition, it is a good idea to include the type of hard disk tested in the comment field.

  15. When you select this command, you will be prompted for a file to use. You can choose an existing file, in which case the record will be merged into the file. Otherwise, select New to make a new file to hold your record.

  17. Save Report‚Ķ
  18. This command allows you to save a report on your system as a text file. This file can be read and printed by any word processor or text editor. If no comment exists for your machine, you will be prompted for one.

  20. Page Setup‚Ķ
  21. This is the standard Page Setup dialog. Be sure to use this command if you change printers from the Chooser during program operation.

  23. Print Report‚Ķ
  24. Prints the same report that is saved by the Save Report command.

  29. Edit
  30. The main Edit menu items are not used in this program, but are provided for those desk accessories that require it. The following is the only Edit item used by Speedometer:

  32. Edit System Comment‚Ķ
  33. Allows you to add a short (256 characters or less) comment to the current system record.

  36. Tests
  37. Performance Rating‚Ķ
  38. Runs a set of tests designed to give a good idea of the "real-world" performance of your system.

  40. Benchmark Mix‚Ķ
  41. Runs a mixture of different benchmarks which have been used over the years to measure system performance.

  43. FPU Benchmarks‚Ķ
  44. Runs three benchmarks from the standard mix, but uses the Floating Point Unit in your system. If there is no FPU available, this command will not be available.

  46. Color Quickdraw‚Ķ
  47. Runs the same simple graphics test for 1, 2, 4, & 8 bit color. The test is similar to the one used in the Performance Rating tests, but uses color Quickdraw and is only available on machines with Color Quickdraw in ROM.

  50. Runs all tests in succession.

  53. Systems Comparison‚Ķ
  54. Loads a Machine Record File and allows comparison of the records in it with the current system and with each other.

  60. Prints the current Comparison Graphs.

  65.        Allows you to delete a single record from a Machine Record File.

  67.        Allows the deletion of an entire Machine Record File.

  70. Generates and prints a system report for a record saved in a Machine Record File.

  74.       Exports the test results from a Machine Record in Excel TEXT format (tab delimitted).

  76.       Exports the test results from all records in a Machine Record File in Excel TEXT format.

  78. Merge Record Files‚Ķ
  79. This will allow you to copy all of the records from one file into another. You will be prompted to choose the source file from which all the records will be copied, and then you will be prompted to choose the destination file into which the records will be copied. The destination file will end up with all of the records in it. Note that you may end up with multiple records with the same name in one file when you do this.

  81. Edit External Comment
  82. Use this command to edit a comment field from a machine record. You will be prompted to open the file containing the record you want to edit. Then you will see a list of the records in that file. WHen you choose the record, the Edit Comment dialog will appear. When you click OK, the new comment will be written to the file.

  85. The Windows menu allows you to display windows that may have become hidden during program operation.
